Do you need a separate policy for a trailer?

An MTPL policy issued for a car does not extend to a trailer: these are two separate vehicles and two separate contracts.

Article 1 of Law of Ukraine No. 3720-IX explicitly lists trailers as land vehicles. Article 7 of the same Law states that only insured vehicles may be used on the territory of Ukraine.

Driving a vehicle without a valid policy carries a fine of UAH 425 under Article 126(1) of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offences. If it is not paid within 15 days, the amount rises to UAH 850.

How much does trailer insurance cost?

There is no longer a single MTPL tariff in Ukraine. Free pricing has applied since 1 January 2025: under Article 12 of Law No. 3720-IX, each insurer sets its own premium using its own tariff calculation methodology. The price for the same trailer therefore differs between companies, and only a quote shows the final figure.

Pricing factor How it works
Trailer type Passenger-car and cargo trailers are priced differently
City of registration The tariff depends on the city where the trailer is registered
Policy term A six-month policy costs less than an annual one, but not half as much: shorter terms cost proportionally more

A cheaper policy does not mean less protection. The sums insured are identical for every insurer — they are set by the Law, not by the company. Deductibles are also prohibited under MTPL contracts (Article 12 of Law No. 3720-IX). Insurers therefore compete on price and service, not on the scope of cover.

Current sums insured:

  • injury to life and health — UAH 500,000 per injured person and UAH 5,000,000 per claim;
  • damage to property — UAH 250,000 per injured person and UAH 1,250,000 per claim.

How to buy trailer insurance online?

Step 1

Enter the trailer details in the calculator — type and city of registration

step-1
Step 2

Choose an insurer's offer from the list

step-2
Step 3

Fill in the owner's details and confirm your phone number with the SMS code

step-3
Step 4

Pay by card and receive the completed policy by email

step-4

What you will need: the trailer registration certificate, and the owner's passport and tax ID number.

Since 1 January 2026 MTPL contracts are concluded exclusively in electronic form — paper policies no longer exist. The policy is sent to the email address you provide.

The contract takes effect from the date and time stated in it, but no earlier than the moment the record is entered into the MTIBU Unified Centralised Database. The record is entered once the premium has been paid in full — partial payment does not produce a valid policy.

You can verify that the policy is valid on the MTIBU website using the trailer's licence plate.

Enter the trailer and owner details accurately. A policyholder who submits inaccurate information that reduces the premium must pay the insurer a penalty of five times the premium — capped at 50% of the claim payment (Article 11 of Law No. 3720-IX).

What you should know about insuring a trailer

The policy does not protect the trailer itself

MTPL covers damage caused to third parties. Damage to, destruction of, or theft of your own trailer is not compensated under this policy. Cargo carried by your vehicle and diminished market value are likewise excluded. Protecting the property itself requires voluntary insurance.

If the trailer was coupled to a car at the time of the accident, the towing vehicle's insurer pays. This also applies where the trailer detached while in motion and continued moving on its own — Article 34 of Law No. 3720-IX states this explicitly.

This does not remove the obligation to insure the trailer. A trailer remains a separate vehicle: it may be towed by another car, rented out, or coupled to a towing vehicle that has no valid policy. In those situations it is the trailer's own policy that responds.

If an accident is found to be the direct result of the vehicle's technical condition failing to meet traffic and technical operation rules, the insurer has a right of recourse against the party at fault after paying the claim (Article 37 of Law No. 3720-IX). For trailers this mainly means the coupling device, brakes and lighting.

A domestic contract is concluded for either six months or one year — the Law provides no other terms for a registered trailer (Article 11). If you use the trailer seasonally, a six-month policy may work out better. It is not, however, half the price: shorter terms cost proportionally more.

The insurance contract stays in force until the end of its term, and the rights and obligations pass to the new owner. Within 15 calendar days of acquiring ownership you must notify the insurer in writing and provide your details (Article 16). Note that concluding a new contract for the same trailer terminates the previous one early: if the trailer already has a valid policy, buying your own will cancel what remains of it.

Frequently asked questions

No. These are two separate vehicles and two separate contracts.

The exact amount depends on the trailer type, city of registration and policy term. A quote takes a couple of minutes.

Yes. The Law provides two terms for a registered vehicle — six months or one year.

Notify the insurer no later than three working days after the incident. If the collision involved only two insured vehicles, the damage is limited to the vehicles, nobody was hurt and the drivers agree on the circumstances, you may complete a European Accident Statement without calling the police. Claims are submitted within one year for property damage and within three years for injury to life or health.
